The Laboratory of Mechanical Integrity (LIM) is a laboratory belonging to the King Juan Carlos University whose main activity is to support the research lines of the Group of Durability and Mechanical Integrity of Structural Materials (DIMME). In this sense, it provides services as testing laboratory, in aspects related to the microstructural and mechanical characterisation of materials, as well as the structural integrity of components and materials. It also provides support on aspects related to the manufacture, processing and in-service behaviour of materials and components. It also has appropriate infrastructure to perform the characterisation against aggressive agents of the different materials corresponding to the lines of research.
The laboratory has extensive experience in the processing and characterisation of coatings with industrial applications, including ceramic, metallic or metal/ceramic composite coatings processed by thermal projection, cold projection and laser plating. The microstructure of these coatings is commonly studied by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Contributions have also been made in the tribological characterisation of coatings, both from an experimental perspective, improving testing methods, and theoretically developing models that allow to better understand the wear processes. Finally, it has studied the degradation of coatings by exposure to high temperature in isotherm and thermal cycling oxidation conditions that simulate different service conditions.
